A Prayer for Our Land

By Steven Grant

2 Chronicles 7:1414If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Our Heavenly Father

We humble ourselves and pray today, bowing down to seek Your face.  Show us our wicked ways as we turn to Jesus Christ for salvation, and to Your Word as our only source of life and guidance.  Teach us the way that is right and good.  Help us to decide once again to follow You, and You alone.

Today we pray for our land.  You gave us this nation, Father, and we are thankful for it.  But we have sinned, and we need Your help.  We have done evil in Your sight.  We have departed from Your precepts and your judgments.  We have not listened to Your prophets. Our leaders at every level have paid lip service to You, while ignoring and disobeying Your laws.  O Lord, righteousness belongs unto You, but confusion belongs to us, because we have sinned.  So we turn to You today.

We have killed Your children and called it legal.  We have allowed sexual immorality into our land, including homosexuality and fornication, and we have mocked the covenant of marriage at every turn.  Forgive us, Lord.

We have allowed strangers and those uncircumcised in heart and flesh to pollute the morals and values of our nation.  You created a land of liberty and justice for all, based on the values of Your Holy Word.  But we have broken Your covenant with the abominations of man.  Our pride testifies to our face.  Strangers have devoured our strength, the strength that only comes from aligning our nation under You, and under Jesus Christ as our fathers instructed us.

We have done wickedly in our spending.  You said it is wicked when we borrow and do not repay.  We repent, O Lord, of this great sin.  Forgive us of embracing the world system of debt as a way of life.  You have made us to be the head and not the tail, to be above and not beneath, to lend and not borrow.  Forgive us for falsifying the balances and scales used in the financial realm.  We repent, O Lord.

Father, we have relied on the government to provide us with everything, when we should have looked to You, the giver of life.  Most of all, we have been proud, arrogant, and self-sufficient.  Forgive us, Lord, for abandoning You and clinging to the arm of man to supply our desires.

Today we also need your wisdom to select godly leaders in government.  You can work through these men and women to turn the tide, but we must know who You want in office.  You said “He that rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.”  You said that the leaders of government must learn the ordinances and laws of God, to know how to rule.  Help us to select leaders with outstanding abilities, but let them fear You most of all.

May they be leaders that believe and live the truth, no matter what the cost.  Show us leaders that hate greed and covetousness, even for themselves.  Let them do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You.  May Your leaders be a terror unto evil, and root out wickedness, unfairness, and everything that is against Your will and Your Word.  May they reward good, and be fair and impartial, providing equal opportunity.  May they equally administer Your justice.

Father deliver us from slavery.  Save us from foreigners ruling over us.  Let us be blessed once again by the fruit of our land, by the works of our hands, and the blessings from heaven above and the earth below.  Let us not be oppressed, but help us to live under the shadow of Your wings.  We put away all idols, heathen gods, and the lusts of our flesh.  We make You our top priority.  Help us to keep Your statutes and judgments, for the sake of Your Name.

Father, You said that You would cause us to understand the difference between the clean and the unclean, between the profane and holy.  Give us the teaching we need to understand the difference, and help us to rise up and put that which is profane in Your sight out of our nation.  Let us be like Nehemiah as we rebuild and reclaim this nation.  For You have chosen us first.  May it be said once again, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, and the people He chose for His inheritance.”

Now our God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and behold our desolations, and this nation that was founded in Your Name.  We do not count on our own righteousness, but we ask You to hear us and to forgive.  Hear, O Lord, and do this for Your sake, and for this nation that is called by Your Name.

In the Name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen!
